Surround Yourself with Experts Who Inspire and Guide
Charles Givens, the renowned author of Wealth Without Risk, once remarked, "If you want to learn about money, learn from someone who has a lot of it." This advice has led many to seek out "successful" people—those who have made their mark in their respective fields. But often, we find ourselves hesitant, thinking that these accomplished individuals won't have time for us or might be reluctant to share their insights. The truth, however, is quite the opposite. Successful people are usually eager to share their knowledge and experiences. They take pride in mentoring others, sharing their hard-earned wisdom, and offering guidance. It makes them feel valued and gives them a chance to reflect on their own journey.
Two of the wealthiest people I know—one who built their fortune from scratch and another who inherited it—are perfect examples of this generosity. Both are more than happy to sit down and discuss ideas with me or anyone else who shows genuine interest. What’s surprising, though, is that they often mention how few people actually approach them to pick their brains. It’s such a missed opportunity! I personally know over a hundred highly successful individuals, and not one of them has ever turned away someone who sought their advice. In fact, when people ask me how I manage to find and collaborate with such amazing professionals on projects, my answer is always the same: "I just ask." You’d be amazed at how willing people are to share their knowledge, whether they’re top executives, successful entrepreneurs, or leading professionals in their fields. Most are eager to help, and they appreciate being asked for their insights.
So for anyone seeking advice on how to connect with experts and have them close at hand for when you need the right word in your ear, whether you are an artist, a person seeking to expand knowledge of a hobby, or a professional seeking to expand their horizons, here are 5 tips on finding just the right minds to connect with.
Tip 1: Network Intentionally to Build Strategic Connections
Networking with intention allows you to connect with experts who align with your goals and can provide valuable insights. Building relationships with the right people opens doors to knowledge, opportunities, and collaborations that can accelerate your personal and professional growth. When you’re surrounded by experts, you can learn from their experiences and avoid common pitfalls.
Start by attending industry events, conferences, or webinars where experts in your field are likely to gather. Set a goal to introduce yourself to at least one new person at each event and follow up with them afterward. Consistently practicing this will help you build a strong network of experts over time.
Tip 2: Seek Out Mentorship to Gain a Guide
Mentors can provide guidance, support, and wisdom that you may not have access to on your own. They can help you navigate challenges, make informed decisions, and offer valuable feedback on your progress. Having a mentor allows you to learn from someone who has already achieved success in your area of interest, giving you a clearer path to follow.
Identify individuals you admire and reach out to them for advice or mentorship. Start by asking for a brief meeting or call to discuss your goals and seek their guidance. Regularly check in with your mentor to update them on your progress and seek further advice, making the relationship an ongoing source of support.
Tip 3: Join Professional Groups to Find an Experts' Circle
Professional groups or associations bring together individuals who share common interests and expertise. By joining these groups, you gain access to a network of knowledgeable professionals who can share insights, resources, and support. Being part of such a community helps you stay informed about industry trends and connect with experts regularly.
Research and join at least one professional group or association in your field. Participate actively by attending meetings, contributing to discussions, or volunteering for committees. Make it a point to engage with the group regularly, so you can build strong connections with other members over time.
Social media platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, and industry-specific forums are powerful tools for connecting with experts across the globe. These platforms allow you to follow industry leaders, participate in discussions, and share content that showcases your own expertise. Engaging with experts online can lead to valuable connections and opportunities to learn from their experiences.
Dedicate a few minutes each day to engaging with experts on social media. Follow industry leaders, comment on their posts, and share relevant content with your network. By consistently participating in online conversations, you’ll start to build relationships with experts and stay updated on industry insights.
Tip 5: Attend Workshops and Seminars to Learn from the Best
Workshops and seminars provide direct access to experts who share their knowledge and experience in a focused setting. These events offer opportunities to learn new skills, ask questions, and interact with industry leaders. Attending such events helps you stay current in your field and connect with experts who can become valuable contacts.
Regularly look for workshops or seminars that align with your interests and professional goals. Set a personal goal to attend at least one event each quarter and take notes on key takeaways. After each event, follow up with speakers or fellow attendees to deepen the connections you made, reinforcing your network of experts.
Most truly successful people are willing to offer their insights and guidance to those who ask. It’s often those who are still climbing the ladder, unsure of their footing, who hesitate to share their strategies or experiences. If you encounter someone unwilling to help, don’t take it personally—just move on to the next potential mentor, who will likely be more open to lending a hand. To avoid pitfalls and accelerate your journey, make it a habit to seek advice from those who have already succeeded in your chosen field. Surround yourself with people who have the experience and knowledge to guide you. Uncle Charley might have a lot of opinions, but unless he’s been where you want to go, his advice won’t get you far. Aim high and go straight to the source of proven success.
Broadening your network with people who can offer fresh perspectives is crucial for your development. Don’t limit yourself to familiar faces—reach out to those who have excelled in different industries or have a unique viewpoint. These are the connections that will broaden your thinking, introduce you to new possibilities, and help you see your challenges from a different angle. By surrounding yourself with a diverse group of successful people, you’ll gain access to a wealth of ideas and experiences that can drive you to achieve more than you ever thought possible. So, take the initiative, step outside your comfort zone, and connect with those who can elevate your thinking and your success.
