Get Ready to Own Next Year
A Playbook for Clarity, Confidence, and Crushing It in the New Year
As we approach a new year, the energy is ripe for reinvention. Depressed, doubtful, or concerned? Here’s the cure. The best way to step into the next chapter is with bold ideas, a clear focus, and a mindset that doesn’t just adapt but thrives. It’s a time of renewal, opportunity, and balance—a perfect framework for the strategies we’ll explore today. This isn’t about generic resolutions; it’s about owning your next year with intentional, actionable changes that shift your perspective and elevate your life and work.
We all experience setbacks, and they often arrive when we least expect them. Changes in life—whether they’re career shifts, family dynamics, or personal challenges—can surprise us with their impact, shaking the foundation of who we thought we were. But it’s in these moments of uncertainty that we’re called to fall back on the strength of our evolving selves—of “evolving our selves” as well. Resilience—that “never-quit self-love,” I call it—comes from recognizing that while change can be unsettling, it’s also an invitation to redefine what truly matters.
In our next edition, “Guiding Lights Ahead: How Defining Core Values Can Illuminate Your Path Forward," we’ll explore how to determine and align with your real values—a crucial step in navigating life's inevitable twists and turns. But for now, this is about stepping forward boldly and getting ready to own the coming year. It’s about focusing on the actionable ideas that empower you to kick ass, rise to the challenges ahead, and step fully into the next version of yourself. Let’s gear up and make it happen.
These seven ideas aren’t just tips—they’re a roadmap to reset, reimagine, and reclaim your potential. From refining your routines to reframing your challenges, each idea is designed to sharpen your focus, strengthen your resolve, and spark creativity in ways that truly matter. Ready to embrace the power of seven? Let’s get started.
1. Audit Your Energy
Your time is finite, and you don’t get more, but your energy determines how effectively you use it. By identifying what energizes you and what drains you, you can make smarter decisions about how to invest your time. Owning your year starts with prioritizing tasks and people that amplify your energy and letting go of anything that doesn’t align with your goals.
Set aside an hour at the end of each week to reflect on what lifted you up and what brought you down. Create an “energy map” (or journal) to track patterns, highlighting the activities or interactions that leave you feeling inspired. Use this map to inform your choices, ensuring you commit to projects and connections that fuel your growth.
Questions to Ask Yourself:
What activities give me energy, and which ones drain it?
How can I spend more time on things that make me feel alive?
Are there commitments I need to release to protect my energy?
2. Reframe Setbacks as Stepping Stones
Every challenge carries a lesson, but it’s up to you to uncover it. Kids all grown up and you’re feeling alone, wondering if you’re too old for that next thing, thinking of besting a sibling at their greatness in a parent's eye? Whatever your take on what constitutes a challenge, reframing setbacks as opportunities for growth shifts your mindset from victim to visionary. This perspective not only builds resilience but also primes you to spot opportunities that others might overlook.
When a setback comes to mind, take the time to jot down what happened and why it feels significant. Then write three ways this situation could push you toward something better. Really spend some time on that part! Over time, this practice will train your brain to see challenges as invitations to innovate and grow.
Questions to Ask Yourself:
What’s one valuable lesson I’ve learned from a recent challenge?
How can I view setbacks as temporary rather than permanent?
What opportunities might emerge from obstacles I’ve faced?
3. Refresh Your Daily Routine
A solid routine is the backbone of consistent success, but even the best routines can get stale. By refreshing your habits, you create space for new inspiration and heightened efficiency. By intentionally designing your day, you create a rhythm that aligns your actions with your values and priorities. A thoughtful routine helps you balance productivity with moments of joy and reflection.
Start small—tweak one part of your routine that feels outdated or uninspiring. Introduce a new element, like a morning meditation, an afternoon walk, or a dedicated block for brainstorming big ideas. Experiment until you find a rhythm that excites and sustains you.
Questions to Ask Yourself:
What parts of my routine feel energizing, and which feel draining?
How can I incorporate more moments of creativity into my day?
What’s one habit I can add that aligns with my goals for the year?
4. Surround Yourself with Challengers
Your circle shapes your success and your inner circle (those you trust for guidance and brainstorms), your thinking. Surrounding yourself with people who challenge and inspire you keeps you sharp, motivated, and accountable. The right connections push you to think bigger, work smarter, and stay focused on your vision.
Reach out to one person each month who inspires you, whether it’s a mentor, a peer, or someone whose work you admire. Schedule regular “growth chats” to exchange ideas, provide feedback, and hold each other accountable. Make intentional networking part of your routine, ensuring your circle evolves with your goals.
Questions to Ask Yourself:
Who in my life challenges me to grow?
How can I build stronger relationships with inspiring people?
What kind of energy do I want to cultivate in my network?
5. Say “No” to Say Yes
Every “yes” you give takes up time and energy that could go toward something more meaningful. It’s important to be helpful but not if it doesn’t allow you growth at any stage in your life. Learning to say “no” is about creating boundaries that protect your focus and align your actions with your priorities. It’s the ultimate act of self-respect and long-term strategy.
Before committing to anything new, ask yourself if it aligns with your top three goals for the year—you will learn more about that in one of our first quarter 2025 articles: “Yes to Less: How Saying ‘No’ Creates Space for Your Goals.” If what you’re considering doesn’t align, practice saying no politely but firmly. Use this reclaimed time to double down on projects and relationships that truly matter.
Questions to Ask Yourself:
What commitments can I let go of to make room for what matters?
How do I feel when I say no to something that doesn’t align with my goals?
What would my schedule look like if I only said yes to my priorities?
6. Cultivate Curiosity
Curiosity drives innovation and keeps life exciting. By exploring new ideas, skills, or perspectives, you expand your horizons and discover untapped potential. Curiosity isn’t just a trait—it’s a skill you can hone to fuel creativity and growth.
Dedicate time each month to explore something outside your comfort zone, like a new book, hobby, or class. Keep a curiosity journal to document what you’re learning and how it impacts your thinking. Over time, this practice will spark new insights and keep your mind open to possibility.
Questions to Ask Yourself:
What’s one new thing I’ve been curious about lately?
How can I create space to explore new ideas?
What has curiosity taught me in the past year?
7. Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection
Perfectionism is the enemy of progress. Knowing the answers you seek, even if you want them so bad you can taste them, is your own worst enemy and simply not possible. We all have to learn from experience—as much as we don’t want to, no matter how old we are. Accept that real is real and then focus on the next; in this case, try small wins. By focusing on small wins and celebrating effort, you maintain momentum and cultivate a mindset of growth. Progress is what builds confidence and sets the stage for bigger successes.
At the end of each day or week, write down one thing you accomplished and how it contributes to your larger goals. Share your wins with a trusted friend or mentor who can celebrate with you. Over time, this habit reinforces the idea that effort and progress are worth celebrating.
Questions to Ask Yourself:
What’s one thing I’m proud of from today or this week?
How can I celebrate effort, not just results?
What does progress look like for me in this season of life?
The real magic of “owning” next year isn’t chance—it’s the deliberate actions you take to turn vision into reality. Each of these ideas is a spark, a tool, and a path forward, designed to help you focus on what truly matters. As you incorporate them into your daily life, you’re not just setting goals; you’re crafting a mindset of purpose and progress.
This is your moment to rise, to own the opportunities waiting for you, and to take charge of the path ahead. These seven principles are more than ideas—they’re a launchpad for transformation. We know you’re capable of incredible things, and now it’s time to go out and prove it to yourself. Let’s make this year unstoppable!
♥️ Thank you for being part of this shared mission to create a life filled with meaning and purpose. Each moment of joy you embrace and every action you take adds to the foundation of a fulfilling and successful year. As you step boldly into the next chapter, remember—it’s yours to create, own, and celebrate.
