Preparedness in Entrepreneurship

So this post happened on the phone and via video conferencing. Alicia and I found ourselves in a spirited exchange of ideas from Sarasota to Ireland and back. We decided to celebrate Black History Month with a series spotlighting today's highlights of diversity in entrepreneurship. You’ll find them in our LinkedIn posts and here, as a Monday spotlight on ideas that we found too big for a post.

Our goal is to listen to the minds of individuals shaping history with their innovative ventures now or those with great thoughts on how entrepreneurs should go about their ventures or adventures, as the case may be. Conversations—casual—transformed into brainstorming sessions. Names back and forth, excitedly discussing potential features found and how to deliver them. We’ll cover all walks of life, from tech wizards breaking barriers to social entrepreneurs creating impactful change.

Each story we uncovered felt like uncovering a hidden gem—a source of inspiration and a beacon for future entrepreneurs. For instance…

We found Kathryn Finney, a venture capitalist and entrepreneur, discussing various aspects of entrepreneurship, particularly for marginalized groups. Kathryn Finney is an influential venture capitalist and entrepreneur renowned for her expertise in technology and investments. She is a well-known figure in the venture capital industry with a vibrant career filled with ground-breaking initiatives for women and underrepresented entrepreneurs. Finney's accomplishments include founding Digital Undivided (DID), a social enterprise that supports black and Latinx women entrepreneurs.

Her experience in nurturing startups, combined with her advocacy for diversity in tech, makes her an authoritative and inspiring voice in entrepreneurship. Listening to Kathryn Finney is not just informative but empowering, especially for those aiming to break barriers in the entrepreneurial landscape.

Offering very practical advice, in a recent post, Kathryn Finney covered five stages she had to achieve to have the mindset to win a game she knew was stacked against her as a woman in a very competitive man’s world. Here are the “5 Stages to Attain Preparedness in Entrepreneurship” or “How to Have Mindset Mastery for the Challenges Ahead.”

Stage 1: You Must Be Comfortable Overcoming Economic and Social Barriers
These barriers help entrepreneurs navigate challenges and succeed in diverse markets because they are challenging. You learn how to be nice in the face of adversity thanks to it. Yes, you are going to run into a lot of people you are not going to enjoy in life, but you must have the skill to know how to work with them—and you only get that through practice.
Reflect daily on your unique experiences and how they shape your business approach. By being in the trenches and knowing how to have the kind of relationships that let you navigate them with ease, being diverse actually makes you stronger as you practice it.

Stage 2: Attain the Mental Preparation Required for Entrepreneurship Through Daily Practice
The unique challenges faced by entrepreneurs don't fit the typical mold, particularly for diversities, women, and people of color. The good news is that mental readiness is crucial for resilience and adaptability in the face of business challenges.
So this week, spend time each morning visualizing your goals and mentally preparing for the day's challenges. Visualization helps with preparedness and helps your mind see through the clutter.

Stage 3: Become Good at Growth and Scaling Strategies
You need to learn how to grow and scale a business, including understanding one’s audience and the market, if you actually want to go big. There’s no middle ground here. Either you decide you will only grow to a certain point, or you have to know how to scale. Effective strategies ensure sustainable business expansion and market relevance.
Research a different aspect of your market each day to deepen your understanding. Learn how to swing from one large audience to another. Today, we work at scale. Where is the next pool of 10 Super-Engaged audience members? They will lead you to the 100 Content Champions that share with the 1000 Super Supporters that bring you to 10,000 Loyal Legends, and so on to pinnacle of the 1,000,000 Fan Phenoms and beyond!

Stage 4: How Skilled Are You at Funding and Investment?
Whether it is a variety of channels or avenues to success, various avenues for funding and investment need to be explored, especially for startups, individuals, and companies aiming to establish high-growth companies. Securing the right funding is essential for business growth and development.
Spend time each week researching different funding sources and preparing pitches. This regular commitment helps you stay updated on new opportunities and trends in funding, ensuring you don't miss out on potential sources that align with your business goals or can inspire new ones. Remember, there’s a fund for everything that is needed out there. Is your business positioned for one?

Stage 5: Learn How to Surround Yourself with the Right People
Networking is who you surround yourself with. Surround yourself with the capacity to build a successful team. The significance of assembling a competent team for business growth is imperative and the right time to do so is always now. A strong network or team enhances business efficiency, innovation, and culture.
Dedicate time each week to understand who among your audience might lead to team development, offer to build skills, webinars to expand connectivity and podcasts where you mine comments for team-building potential. Moderators and influencers with the desire to grow with you are always a plus. Who are you attracting?
